"Self-portrait" is dated 1901. On it, Vasily Dmitrievich Polenov about sixty years. This man was gifted with many talents and was interested in all kinds of areas of art.

V. Polenov was a pioneer, taking up the study and development of those areas that before him were considered not worthy of the attention of the fundamental master. As a result of such research, the painter favored the formation of a new type of unique artists and, as can be seen in the modern world, new stylistics and trends in art.

At the time of writing this picture, Vasily Dmitrievich wrote little, focusing on the development and creation of theatrical scenery. Unfortunately, "Self-portrait" does not provide an opportunity to learn and appreciate the artistic features of the master. He paid great attention to technology, tried it and was open to all new directions. Occupying most of his works was the landscape. V. Polenov notes that it was thanks to this genre that he was best able to reflect "his thoughts and feelings."

The drawing accurately conveys the face of a richly spiritual humble man. A tenacious look, even without color, conveys the wisdom of a brilliant master who went down in the history of art as a "poet of painting." He discovered the innermost atmosphere of patriarchal estates and the joyful pacification of everyday life, the attractiveness of the landscapes of their native places and the colorful and colorful splendor of the East.

An invaluable contribution from V. Polenov will be the development of plein air, presenting his contemporaries with new artistic horizons, mesmerizing with their "freshness" and an abundance of methods for translating their ideas and moods.

V. Polenov was deeply convinced that art should bear grace and rapture, otherwise it is meaningless. He saw his duty as an artist in the aesthetic enlightenment of society, the opportunity to know and relate to the bright and beautiful, that which fills life with meaning and inner beauty.
