Yu.Yu. Klever is one of the most prominent representatives of Russian landscape painters. A painter of German origin, he always dreamed of returning to his native land.

The painting “Sunset in the winter” reflects the beauty of nature. The image looks a bit cosmic, the sun disk is almost completely visible, and the clouds around it add mystery and set off a fiery-hot ball.

The last sun's rays are reflected in a quiet smooth surface. The river goes into infinity, and the road from the glare of sunshine takes the contemplator into the depths of the cosmic universe. The water surface passes through the forest edge. You might think that this is the outskirts and people rarely visit such places.

A lean wooden house stands alone, squinting at the weight of the snow. At first glance, such a dwelling seems abandoned and for many years continues to stand alone near the shore, meeting its sunset. From the pipe you can see a subtle flowing smoke. So, nevertheless, no one left the house and life continues in it.

From the picture a little breathes loneliness. Perhaps it was during this period of creativity that Clover felt like a hermit, lost in life, like this house by the river. He also stands at a loss and watches the sunset, which symbolizes the end of a certain stage of life. During the creation of the work, the artist lived abroad and suffered very much about this.

The picture conveys the atmosphere of a winter evening, as if nature fell asleep. Two trees in the foreground seemed to freeze before crossing the river. They doubt their decision, but are not in a hurry with a choice. It remains a mystery what exactly worried Yu.Yu. Klever. He doubted the decision or, like a rickety house, stood and watched sunset after sunset.

And everything is beautiful around, a magnificent landscape, an endless river, but the sunset winds up sadness. It was sadness that froze in beautiful reflections on the riverbed, emphasized by a flock of clouds.
